Join Larry Smith, consumer protection attorney and co-founder of SmithMarco P.C. for this episode of “Credit Talk” on Chicago Access Network Television. Larry discusses how to access and dispute incorrect information on all of you credit and background reports, not just the credit reports from the three large credit reporting agencies. He also talks about how to recognize and avoid debt collection scams, which are on the rise, along with other credit topics.
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), consumers have the right to access information in their various credit and background reports and dispute incorrect information in those reports. There are many more reports that lendors, employers, and landlords can access on consumers’ backgrounds other than the three large credit reports.
Debt collection scams are rising. Debt collectors will call or contact consumers about debt from years ago from a small lendor or doctor and threaten legal and criminal prosecution if it is not paid right away. Real debt collectors, supported by the law, are able to directly garnish your wages or collect on the debt without resorting to threats. They do not warn you before collecting to get you to pay.
